Scroll through any health-related social media feed and you will find someone declaring that cinnamon can "naturally lower blood sugar" or even "replace diabetes medication." Those claims range from enthusiastic to reckless — but they are not entirely baseless, either.

Cinnamon has a long history in traditional medicine. And in recent years, researchers have been studying it seriously — running randomized controlled trials, publishing systematic reviews, and asking a straightforward question: does cinnamon supplementation actually improve blood sugar in humans?

The answer, like most things in nutrition science, is not a simple yes or no. But it is more encouraging than many skeptics might expect — and more nuanced than what social media typically conveys.

Let's walk through the evidence together.

Two Types of Cinnamon — and Both Have Been Studied

Before we get into the research, there is an important distinction worth understanding. When we say "cinnamon," we are actually talking about two different species of the same spice — and both have been used in clinical studies on blood sugar.

Cassia cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) is the variety you are most likely to find at the grocery store. It accounts for roughly 90% of the cinnamon sold in the United States. It has a bold, robust flavor and is sometimes called "Chinese cinnamon."

Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), sometimes called "true cinnamon," comes primarily from Sri Lanka. It has a milder, more complex flavor and is less commonly available.

Here is what matters for this conversation: both types have been shown to have a lowering effect on blood glucose levels in clinical studies. To our knowledge, no head-to-head clinical trial has directly compared the effectiveness of one species against the other for blood sugar management.

An important note about coumarin: Cassia cinnamon does contain more coumarin than Ceylon — a natural compound that, in very large amounts over a long period, can put stress on the liver. This is why the form and dose of cinnamon matter. A concentrated extract (like a 10:1 bark extract used in supplement capsules) delivers the beneficial compounds at a much smaller physical dose than eating tablespoons of raw cinnamon powder — keeping coumarin exposure well within the range used safely in clinical trials lasting up to four months.

The bottom line? Both species show promise for blood sugar support. The majority of the positive clinical evidence to date has actually come from studies using Cassia cinnamon — the more common, more widely available, and more extensively researched variety.


What Does the Clinical Research Actually Show?

The research on cinnamon and blood sugar has grown significantly over the last two decades. We are no longer relying on animal studies and small pilot trials — there are now multiple large-scale meta-analyses (studies that pool data from many clinical trials) that give us a much clearer picture.

Fasting Blood Sugar

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Nutrition Reviews examined 28 randomized controlled trials involving over 3,000 patients with type 2 diabetes. The researchers found that cinnamon supplementation significantly reduced fasting blood glucose by an average of about 15 mg/dL compared to placebo. That is a meaningful reduction — roughly comparable to what some people achieve through dietary changes alone.

An earlier landmark study — the one that helped put cinnamon on the map — gave Cassia cinnamon at doses of 1, 3, or 6 grams daily to 60 people with type 2 diabetes for 40 days. All three dosing groups saw significant decreases in fasting glucose (18–29%), and the improvements persisted for 20 days after supplementation stopped.

Post-Meal Blood Sugar

The 2025 Nutrition Reviews analysis also found a pronounced effect on post-meal (postprandial) glucose levels, with reductions averaging around 39 mg/dL. This matters because post-meal blood sugar spikes are one of the key drivers of long-term metabolic damage.

A separate clinical trial published through the Endocrine Society gave 500 mg of Cassia cinnamon three times daily to people with prediabetes and found that blood glucose levels after meals returned to normal faster than in the placebo group — a finding the researchers described as significant.

HbA1c (Long-Term Blood Sugar)

HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the previous two to three months, and it is the gold standard measurement for ongoing glucose management. Multiple meta-analyses have found modest but statistically significant reductions in HbA1c — typically in the range of 0.27% to 0.56% — with cinnamon supplementation. While that may sound small, a 0.5% reduction in HbA1c is clinically meaningful and can reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications over time.

Insulin Resistance

Several studies have also reported improvements in HOMA-IR — a commonly used measure of insulin resistance. The 2025 Nutrition Reviews analysis found that cinnamon significantly reduced HOMA-IR scores, suggesting that the spice may help the body use insulin more effectively — not just reduce glucose in isolation.

The evidence does not support cinnamon as a replacement for diabetes medication. But it does support it as a meaningful addition to a broader blood sugar management strategy — particularly for people with prediabetes or early type 2 diabetes.


How Does Cinnamon Affect Blood Sugar? The Mechanisms

Cinnamon is not a single-mechanism ingredient. Researchers have identified several ways its bioactive compounds — including cinnamaldehyde, type-A polyphenol polymers, and procyanidins — appear to influence glucose metabolism:

In other words, cinnamon does not simply "lower blood sugar" through one pathway. It appears to work across multiple mechanisms simultaneously — improving how your body responds to insulin, how it processes glucose, and how it manages the inflammatory environment that makes insulin resistance worse over time.

Cassia cinnamon is particularly high in cinnamaldehyde — the primary bioactive compound responsible for many of these effects — which may be one reason it features so prominently in the clinical research.


Why the Form Matters: Extract vs. Powder

You might be wondering: if cinnamon has these benefits, can I just sprinkle more on my oatmeal?

You can certainly enjoy cinnamon in your food. But there is an important distinction between culinary use and supplemental use — and it comes down to concentration and consistency.

Most clinical studies used either cinnamon powder at doses of 1 to 6 grams per day, or standardized cinnamon extracts in the range of 120 to 500 mg per day. The reason extracts can be effective at a lower milligram dose is that the active compounds are concentrated during extraction. A 10:1 bark extract, for example, means that 10 parts of raw cinnamon bark have been concentrated into 1 part of extract — delivering the beneficial polyphenols and cinnamaldehyde in a more potent, more consistent form.

The Honest Caveats: What the Research Does Not Show

We believe in giving you the full picture — not just the highlights. So here is what the evidence does not support:

❶ Cinnamon is not a medication replacement. No study has shown that cinnamon can replace metformin, insulin, or other prescribed diabetes treatments. If you are on medication, do not change your regimen without talking to your doctor.

❷ The effect in people with normal blood sugar is minimal. Research suggests that cinnamon's benefits are most pronounced in people with elevated glucose — those with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. In healthy individuals with normal blood sugar, the effects appear to be much smaller or absent altogether.

❸ Study heterogeneity is high. While most meta-analyses show a positive trend, the individual studies vary widely in dosage, cinnamon type, duration, and study design. A 2025 umbrella review of meta-analyses in Frontiers in Nutrition described the effects as "promising" but emphasized the need for better-standardized research going forward. Some individual trials — particularly those using lower doses (1–1.5 grams) for short durations — found no significant effect.

❹ It works best as part of a broader strategy. No single supplement is a silver bullet. The people who see the best results are those combining cinnamon supplementation with smart nutrition, regular movement, adequate sleep, and appropriate medical care. Cinnamon is a tool in the toolbox — an effective one, but not the only one.

These caveats are not reasons to dismiss cinnamon. They are reasons to use it thoughtfully — as one part of a daily routine that supports your metabolic health from multiple angles.
